Important Alert: Google and Yahoo will require DMARC starting from April 2024.

Why Does the UK Need DMARC Protection?

Email phishing is responsible for more than 9 out of every 10 data loss incidents in the world. That’s more than any other single factor making organizations like yours lose sensitive data. Worse yet, they could be using your brand name to target the general public—your customers—and causing them to lose trust in your brand.

Email Spoofing in the UK is Major Threat

As of May 2020, the UK has nearly 71,000 domains implementing DMARC, placing it 3rd on the list of countries with protected domains. This still means the majority of the UK’s registered domains are unprotected against cyberattacks. What’s more, not all users will have it enforced — you’re only DMARC-enforced when you set your policy to quarantine or reject.

  • While businesses in the UK have not shown great interest in adopting newer email security protocols, the UK government has been more forward-thinking in this respect. As early as 2012, the Government Digital Service issued guidelines on implementing DMARC for UK government services.

  • In October 2016, these guidelines were to take effect on all services running on service.gov.uk. However, as of 2019, only 28% of all gov.uk domains have enabled DMARC. Even more worrying is the fact that 53% of these domains set their policy to ’none’, making their implementation ineffective. Despite early efforts by the government, the UK still has a long way to go with DMARC adoption.
